North Wales Police have thanked most people for observing the coronavirus lockdown rules.

Officers have been out patrolling across the region this weekend in a clampdown on non-essential travel.

It began with a checkpoint being set up on the A494 in Deeside – one of the main gateways into the area – and the chief constable pledging the force would use new powers against anyone who flouts the COVID-19 guidance.

In contrast to the scenes witnessed last weekend, police have shared pictures of beauty spots and popular tourist haunts looking empty this time round.

While they have thanked the majority for helping to save lives though they say there are still some not playing ball.

In a statement posted on Facebook, the force said: “We’ve been on patrol in our communities and on the roads this weekend and from these pictures it’s clear that the vast majority of you are supporting us by staying at home. Thank you – you really are playing your part to help save lives.

“Patrols are continuing so if you do have to travel for an essential reason (work, health or food) we may stop and talk to you. The roads and streets will be quiet so you will stand out…

“Sadly, some individuals, who were not from the North Wales area, were spoken to at the weekend and told to return home. Travelling here ‘for fresh air’ or ‘to walk in the countryside’ is NOT an essential journey.”

One example of the rules being ignored was highlighted after police received reports of people panning for gold near Dolgellau.

There was also controversy when a man removed a sign telling visitors to “go home” from outside the marina in Y Felinheli.

Police said they would continue to patrol the region while the pandemic is ongoing.
