Snowdonia mountain rescuers facing busy period amid ‘six week holiday madness’
Mountain rescuers in Snowdonia say they are currently experiencing a very busy period amid what they described as “six week holiday madness”.
Members of the Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team were called out to six incidents in a single day on Sunday.
And there has been no let up with three call outs over the course of yesterday afternoon and evening alone.
Team members said the recent bad weather had led to an increase in people becoming injured on the popular Llanberis Path up Snowdon.
They have now issued advice to those planning to walk up Wales’ highest mountain.
Posting on Facebook, the team said: “It’s the middle of August and we’re currently amongst six week holiday madness. After ending our busy six job Sunday, the work hasn’t stopped.
“We’ve had at least a call out every day and three yesterday afternoon/evening. Stretcher carries are getting trickier with fewer team members available mid-week with day jobs.
“The Llanberis path is one of the longest and steepest routes on the mountain. The poor weather has made ‘Alt Coch’ on the Llanberis path a steep, slippery accident black spot. Four concurrent knee injuries here.
“It’s worth pointing out that once you reach Snowdon summit you’re only halfway there. Saving some energy to stop the wobbly legs is worthwhile.
“When temperatures drop and the rain comes, your body needs more fuel. Keep feeding the engine.
“A massive thank you to Snowdon Mountain Railway and Maritime Coastguard for the uplift and for all those team members who are juggling a day job and a mountain rescue side hustle.”
The Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team is a fully voluntary organisation who respond to those in need on Snowdon and the surrounding mountains.
The team is on-call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and relies entirely on donations from members of the public to carry out this essential life-saving rescue service.
