A rescue operation was launched last night after a woman fell and broke her ankle on the beach in Prestatyn.

Coastguard teams and the Welsh Ambulance Service were called to the woman’s aid on Barkby Beach after she had fallen down sand dunes.

Because of the terrain and the distance to the ambulance, the coastguard helicopter was also called to assist.

The decision was then taken by the helicopter crew to take the woman on board and land next to the ambulance so she could be taken to hospital.

As the rescue teams from Flint and Rhyl were standing down, a member of the public approached coastguard officers with concerns for a man seen drinking a large bottle of whiskey.

He was last seen walking towards the waters edge on Barkby Beach.

With the incoming tide both teams were tasked to carry out a search of the beach and immediate area.

A white illumination parachute flare was set off to light up the immediate area but no one was seen.

Flint Coastguard said: “As a result two search teams were sent out with one searching east and one searching towards the west.

“After a 15 minute search a male matching the description was seen and approached.

“He confirmed he was not in any danger and had been walking along the water’s edge after seeing the Coastguard Rescue Helicopter from the previous incident.

“We were happy this was the male reported and we had no cause for concerns.”
