“Professor Chris Whitty Gritty” and “Snowcial Distancing” are among some off the fun names suggested for Conwy Council’s fleet of gritters.

The council recently asked the public for help in naming its fleet of 13 gritter trucks, which are on standby 24/7 between October and April to spread rock salt and plough snow.

The authority’s judging panel has now made a shortlist and is asking people to vote to decide the “best in snow”.

Thankfully there’s no “Gritty McGritface” with the suggestions instead featuring a strong Covid-19 theme, including a reference to the UK Government’s Chief Medical Adviser.

Some of the names give a nod to more local celebrities such as “Neville Snowfall”, paying homage to Llandudno-born former Wales goalkeeper Neville Southall.

“I’m a Celeb-gritty” has also made the shortlist after Gwrych Castle near Abergele played host to the popular ITV reality show this year.

Other suggestions include “Tafod y Ddraig” (which translates as “The Dragon’s Tongue”) and “Daw Eto Haul” (“The Sun Will Rise Again”).

The most popular gritter names will be added to the council’s new tracking system, which will allow residents to see gritter locations in real time via its website.
