Police are warning dog owners to be on their guard after a spate of thefts where valuable pets have been targeted.

It follows three dachshunds being stolen from a farm in Gobowen, close to the Welsh border, on Thursday night.

One of the animals, which were taken away in a white van, was heavily pregnant, leading the owner to believe that she was stolen to order.

Police in south Wales are also investigating after 12 spaniels were taken in Newport.

It has led North Wales Police to urge dog owners to take precautions.

The force said: “Please be vigilant following a number of incidents in Wales where attempts are being made to steal dogs, particularly spaniels.

“If you have a dog please ensure it is kept secure and not left on show or unattended. If you see any suspicious activity please call us immediately.”
