New planters give boost to Caergwrle Social Club

Planters are helping brighten up the entrance to Caergwrle Social Club thanks to a donation from Castle Green Homes.

The social club received a share of £5,000 under the voluntary Mission Green Abermorddu scheme, which linked to the new Maes y Castell housing development.

Committee member Allan Parsonage said the planters have had a positive impact to the exterior of the venue.

He said: “Caergwrle Social Club is a non-profit organisation, and we struggle to break even, so we applied to Castle Green Homes for a grant under Mission Green.

“Our application was successful and we received enough money to build planters to hide the awful bins and fill them with plants. It’s made such a difference to the view of the club from the road.”

The other beneficiaries were 1st Hope Scout Group, Abermorddu CP School, Castell Alun High School, Hope Community Council and Hwb Caergwrle.

Castle Green sales director Sian Pitt said: “Places like Caergwrle Social Club are at the heart of the community, providing a meeting place and focal point for a variety of activities supporting the wellbeing of residents from art classes to line dancing, bingo or simply screening sports so people can watch together.

“We understand that funds are tight so were happy to help with a donation for planters. They don’t simply conceal the bins; they brighten up the entrance helping welcome visitors and providing a source of food for pollinators.”

Mission Green Abermorddu is in addition to the community investment Castle Green agreed during the planning process. That funding includes almost £222,000 towards improvements at Castell Alun High School.

Once complete, Maes y Castell will comprise 70 homes. There will be 49 private sale properties and 21 affordable homes.

An area of public open space will be provided, with hedgerow and tree planting carried out by the homebuilder.
