A lorry driver has been reported for careless driving after he kept travelling following a tyre blowout.

Shortly before 5.30am today, police received reports of a HGV’s tyre bursting near to the Llanfairfechan roundabout.

The driver had continued to travel westbound over the Britannia Bridge, leaving tyre debris in the carriageway as he went along.

A short while later, an officer located the lorry parked in Menai Bridge where it was discovered to have been driving on its rim with the mud guard missing and the brackets hanging against the suspension.

The driver claimed that he “wasn’t aware” and has since been reported for the offence of careless driving.

North Wales Police’s Roads Policing Unit said: “With the assistance of other officers, debris was removed from the carriageway as it posed a risk to other vehicles.

“Doesn’t bear thinking what could have happened.

“As drivers, it it your responsibility to check your vehicle’s condition.

“We advise that you regularly check your tyre pressures for under or over-inflation, and ensure that you are aware of your vehicles maximum load weight and don’t go over it.

“We also urge you to check for any obvious damage to the area of tread or the sidewall’s for cuts, cracks or bulges.”
