A man from Rhyl has today been jailed after robbing two shops at knife-point and attempting to raid another.

Andrew Thomas Smith, 26, has been sentenced to five years and ten months behind bars for the offences carried out at stores in Rhyl and Dyserth during December.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Jenny Sansom at St Asaph CID said: “This was a very frightening and traumatic experience for the staff involved as well as the community in general.

“The sentence is welcomed and reflects the seriousness of the offences and we thank the community for all the support and understanding given as this investigation progressed.”

Detective Inspector Elfyn Hughes added: “Robbery is an extremely serious, but fortunately rare event, in this area. Officers have worked tirelessly to bring the offender to justice as well safeguarding and reassuring the public.

“North Wales Police will relentlessly pursue those who cause harm in our communities. The sentence reinforces our commitment to making North Wales the safest place in the UK.”
