The trustees of the North Wales castle hosting this year’s I’m a Celebrity series say £10m is required to deliver the first phase of planned repairs to the venue.

As North.Wales reported yesterday, a fundraiser to improve facilities at Gwrych Castle near Abergele received a major boost after the first episode of the ITV show presented by Ant and Dec was aired last night.

The amount of money donated to deliver mains electricity and water supplies at the 200-year-old castle has surged beyond £5,000 on the trusts’s gofundme page.

However, members of the Gwrych Castle Preservation Trust have revealed the actual amount required for the project to move forward is significantly larger.

They also said the fee paid by ITV to secure the use of the property was not the £1m previously reported, with the owners thought to be receiving £300,000.

They said: “We need your help to enable us to finally blow out the candles and bring light back to Gwrych Castle for the first time since the 1980’s!

“The total project cost for Phase 1 of the repair of the castle will be around £10 million.

“Be part of history by supporting Britain’s biggest castle rescue. Though services do not immediately sound romantic, this is a major step to bring the castle back to life once again.

“We know that times are tough at the moment so donations are even more appreciated. Help us turn on the taps and lights again by donating and sharing this page to spread the word.

“PS I’m A Celebrity have NOT installed electric or water. Their fee is no way near £1 million that’s been reported in the press.”
