Black Lives Matter protests set to be held in North Wales this weekend
Protests are set to be held in North Wales this weekend as part of the #BlackLivesMatter campaign.
Thousands have already demonstrated across the UK this week to support the fight for racial equality.
They were sparked by the death of George Floyd, an African-American, who was killed in Minneapolis after a police officer held his knee against his neck.
The first protest in the region will take place in Bangor city centre on Saturday.
The North Wales Africa Society (NWAS) said it was organising a socially distanced peaceful demonstration starting at 1pm at the War Memorial opposite Pontio.
People are asked not to attend if they live outside a 5-mile radius but are invited to #TakeTheKnee on their doorstep at the same time
Dr Salamatu J. Fada, Chair of NWAS, said: “This marks a concerted effort in North Wales to raise awareness of the history of racism and to understand the ongoing implications in our community.
“We are all part of a system that needs to be dismantled to ensure equality exists and that black lives matter.”
Bangor City Mayor, John Wyn Williams said: “This a very important event and I fully support it.
“This is an opportunity for all of us to stand alongside all those across the globe who are appalled and horrified by the way George Floyd lost his life.”
A similar protest is also being held in Wrexham on Sunday, starting at 1pm in Bellevue Park.
Organisers have also issued advice surrounding social distancing due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Iolanda Banu Viegas said: “This is a peaceful and safe protest against hate crimes and violence around the world.
“It’s also Covid-19 times, for this we urge everyone to bring a face mask and hand sanitiser and always keep two meters apart from each other.
“Please be aware of the 5 mile radius from your home. We are still not allowed to travel in Wales.”
