An Anglesey man who threatened to ‘take down police’ with a makeshift petrol bomb has been jailed for ten months.

Leo Simon Ratcliffe of Llangefni was seen by a member of the public placing a bottle of prosecco which had a strong smell of petrol and a rag in the top into the boot of his car.

The 31-year-old then stated that he was “going to take the police down” and drove at speed towards the local station.

Local officers were alerted and a search of the area surrounding Llangefni police station led to the discovery of a smashed bottle of prosecco.

He later admitted possessing an item with intent to destroy or damage property and dangerous driving.

Speaking after a sentencing hearing at Caernarfon Crown Court yesterday, Detective Constable Leslie Ellis said: “This incident had the potential to endanger the lives of police officers and staff, as well as any members of the public in the area at the time.

“Thanks to the vigilance of those who witnessed it, we were alerted to the situation and Ratcliffe was subsequently arrested.

“The court has acknowledged the seriousness of Ratcliffe’s actions and I welcome the custodial sentence handed down.

“It is not acceptable that whilst striving to protect our communities, police officers and staff are the subject of such outrageous behaviour.”
