YesCymru stickers slammed as ‘littering and graffiti’ by Conservative MS
Stickers showing support for the YesCymru campaign for Welsh independence have been slammed as “littering and graffiti” by a Conservative Senedd Member.
The movement’s logo can frequently be seen on signs, buildings and other locations around Wales, including the one pictured above by North.Wales in Criccieth.
The sight of the stickers has incurred the wrath of Clwyd West MS Darren Millar during a plenary session in the Senedd today.
His criticism was made after questions were raised over a planned eight storey tall Union Jack on a UK Government building in Cardiff.
In response to comments made by Plaid Cymru MS Rhys ab Owen MS, who raised concerns over the process which saw the flag permitted, Mr Millar said: “First Minister, we all know that Rhys ab Owen and his colleagues on the Plaid benches would not be raising such objections if this was Y Ddraig Goch that was going to be erected in this UK Government building.
“But it happens to be a union flag, which, of course, is the flag of the United Kingdom—something of which I am proud to be a citizen.
“Can I ask you what action the Welsh Government is taking, if we want to talk about legal advertising, to address the proliferation of Yes Cymru stickers around the length and breadth of Wales, for which there appears to be no concern whatsoever being expressed by members of the party that is raising this concern in the Senedd today?
“This is an affront to local communities; this is littering and graffiti of the highest order and needs to be addressed.”
Following his comments, Ynys Mon MS Rhun ap Iorwerth appeared to deride the remark and said: “He can’t even keep a straight face.”
In response to Mr Millar, First Minister Mark Drakeford said: “In Gwydyr House in London, the Welsh flag—Y Ddraig Goch—and the union jack are both flown and are both flown, the same size flag, at that building.
“I wonder whether the UK Government has thought of replicating the way in which they act in London in the way that they will act, now, in the centre of Cardiff.
“If they were to come forward with an application for a Welsh flag of the same size and scale on the building, well, that would simply be to replicate what they have already decided to do where Gwydyr House is concerned in Whitehall.
“As to Yes Cymru insignia, it’s not a matter for the Welsh Government, and I don’t believe it was particularly within the ambit of the question as originally posed.”
