Warning issued over algae outbreak at Rhyl Marine Lake
A warning has been issued after an outbreak of blue-green algae was identified at Rhyl Marine Lake.
In the interest of public health, Denbighshire County Council is advising residents and visitors not to enter the water.
Meanwhile, signs have been put up around the lake to warn people.
Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) can be found in many inland waters, estuaries and the sea.
The blooms produce toxins that can harm the health of both human’s and animals.
It has the potential to cause illnesses such as gastro-enteritis, pneumonia and hepatoenteritis.
Symptoms associated with exposure include headaches, fever, diarrhoea and vomiting, blisters in the mouth and sore throat. Skin contact can cause rashes and irritation.
A council spokesperson said: “If you have been in contact with water from Marine Lake and are experiencing any of the above symptoms, consult your GP as soon as possible.
“Domestic animals should also be kept away from the water as ingestion of the algae can be harmful.”
