A warning has been issued as large numbers of Portuguese man o’ war have been washed up on the coastline of Gwynedd.

Visitors to beaches in the county are being urged to be extremely vigilant and keep an eye out for the creatures which are blue and purple in colour.

They also have many venomous tentacles that are typically over ten metres long.

Barry Davies, Gwynedd Council’s maritime officer said: “If you come across a Portuguese man-o-war, please do not touch it. The tentacles are toxic and will cause a painful sting.

“If anyone gets stung, please seek medical help immediately and report the incident to the council’s maritime service.”

More of the creatures could be washed up following the recent strong winds, and the council has reiterated that the public should take care whilst visiting beaches.

Please report any sightings to Gwynedd Council’s maritime service on 01758 704 066.
