A trade union has welcomed the news that all staff at a factory on Anglesey forced to close due to a coronavirus outbreak will be fully paid.

Unite the Union had originally expressed fears that workers at the 2 Sisters poultry processing plant on Llangefni would not receive their normal pay package during the 14 day self isolation period.

It came after Public Health Wales said 158 employees had tested positive for COVID-19 as of yesterday.

However, following further negotiations between the union and the company, it hs been announced that all 560 staff members will be paid the same amount as usual.

The amount will be come out of a £1m hardship fund established by the firm to support employees during the current crisis.

It has also pledged to work closely with Unite to ensure they are able to return safely to work at the end of the self-isolation period.

Peter Hughes, Unite Wales Regional Secretary said: “Unite welcomes the decision by 2 Sisters to agree to our call for all employees to receive full pay during the period of self-isolation.

“The company has rightly recognised that their workforce should not suffer any financial detriment during this necessary process of quarantine.

“Unite is committed to working very closely with 2 Sisters in order to put every measure in place to ensure the workplace is as safe as it can possibly be when the workforce return.

“No stone should be left unturned in the process of protecting our members and the wider community”.
