Rhyl flood defences set to be bolstered as council seeks views on improvement plans

Denbighshire County Council is inviting people to have their say as the it begins developing plans and a bid for funding to improve coastal defences in the heart of Rhyl.

The work follows the completion of existing coastal defences in west Rhyl in 2015, and current works taking place between Splash Point and Rhyl Golf Course.

The final stretch of Rhyl’s coastal defences requiring attention is the central area, between the Drift Park and Splash Point.

Cllr Brian Jones, the council’s lead member for waste, transport and the environment, said: “The council understands how important this busy area of promenade is to Rhyl’s identity and economy.

“However, due to the level of defence required to protect the town, the range of options available to the council in terms of what defences can be installed are likely to be limited.

“The council would like to find out what is most important to people who use the promenade so that these views can be considered as the council further develops these options.”

Options include scour protection and concrete repairs to the existing sea wall, a concrete revetment to absorb energy from the waves and to provide access to the beach, a new flood defence wall and raising the height of the promenade and widening the promenade behind the Rhyl Central car park.

The consultation will be live from 21 July 2021

Posters containing information about the scheme will be on public display at the RNLI Lifeboat Station, The East Rhyl Coastal Defence Scheme Compound and the Rhyl Tourist Information Centre.

The deadline for all feedback at this stage of the project is Wednesday 11th August.
