Railway worker has ‘near miss’ with train travelling 72mph while clearing icicles from tunnel in Gwynedd

A railway worker narrowly avoided being hit by a train while clearing icicles from a tunnel in Gwynedd last month.

A passenger train travelling at 72 mph was involved in the near miss with a track worker who was carrying out work to inspect the Llandygai tunnel.

Fortunately there were no injuries during the incident, which occurred at around 12:32pm on 13 February 2021,

The matter is now being looked into by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch.

A spokesperson said: “We have undertaken a preliminary examination into the circumstances surrounding this incident.

“Having assessed the evidence which has been gathered to date, we have decided to publish a safety digest.

“The safety digest will be made available on our website in the next few weeks.”
