A popular footbridge at Penrhyndeudraeth has now re-opened after being closed since 2017.

Pont y Mileniwm, which is used to cross swampland within the popular Parc y Mileniwm in the town, was erected at the turn of the millennium and is very popular with local residents.

Following extensive use, the condition of the bridge deteriorated to such a degree that it was deemed dangerous, but following the Welsh Government’s Access Improvement grant, the bridge repair work has now been completed.

Councillor Gareth Griffith, Gwynedd Council’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for footpaths, said: “We are delighted that the bridge has officially re-opened. It is a very important resource within the community, and means that people can once again have access to parts of the park for leisure activities, which is as important as ever during this challenging period of the coronavirus.

“I would like to thank everyone involved in the project for their co-operation as well as the contractor who completed the work, Dinas Contracting Ltd.”

Local County Councillor, Councillor Gareth Thomas, said: “Everyone in the area is delighted to see the bridge re-opened.

“The area is a very popular spot in the area by local residents, and I’m sure visitors will benefit when the restrictions loosen, providing a boost to the local economy. ”

The project was funded by the Welsh Government’s Improving Access in conjunction with Penrhyndeudraeth Town Council and Gwynedd Council’s Countryside Department.
