Frontline police officers on Anglesey have been equipped with metal detecting wands following a number of incidents involving concealed weapons.

Every response vehicle on the island have had the devices added to their equipment inventory.

Officers will use the devices during stop and search and during post arrest search procedures.

Area Support Sgt Ian Roberts said: “Anglesey remains a safe place to live and work and we are committed to make Anglesey one of the safest places in the UK.

“This is the first time such devices have been actively used by response officers. The wellbeing of the team is paramount and these devices will add another layer of protection to prevent any injuries.

“Unfortunately, there have been instances of detainees having concealed items that may be used as weapons, such as blades.

“Clearly these are dangerous, and on certain occurrences are difficult to detect during searches”.

The devices have recently been recently used in Holyhead and members of the public will see them being used around the island.

If you have any information regarding persons carrying weapons or prohibited items, contact crime stoppers on https://crimestoppers-uk.org/

Anglesey policing team has thanked the Volunteer Police Cadets and Tesco for supporting the initiative.
