Three people from Mansfield have been arrested after a cross-border police operation earlier this afternoon.

The busy A51 Nantwich bypass was closed off in a police incident this afternoon.

Traffic was stopped in both directions as a large number of police vehicles were seen stopping a car.

Three men from the blue Citroen were arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted theft.

A Cheshire Police spokesperson said: “Shortly after 3pm officers from Cheshire Police, supported by the National Police Air Service, conducted a pre-emptive vehicle stopped a blue Citroen C3 on the A51 near Nantwich.

“The three occupants of the vehicle, three men from Mansfield, were arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted theft.

“One of the men was also arrested for a breach of a court order.

“The arrests relates to an incident which occurred at a store in Ruthin earlier today.”

The police stop of the vehicle happened between the Peacock and Alvaston roundabouts on the single carriageway stretch at around 3pm today.

Witnesses said a police helicopter was also overhead at the time of the incident, backed up by North.Wales’ aircraft tracker.

One witness said: “Police had stingers out on either lorry or car. Helicopters and undercover police everywhere!”
