North Wales council set to raise the flag to commemorate 75th anniversary of VJ Day

Denbighshire County Council is marking VJ Day by flying a bilingual flag.

The flag will be flown at County Hall, Ruthin, on August 15 marking the 75th anniversary of VJ Day, which brought about the end of the Second World War.

Cllr Meirick Lloyd-Davies, Chair of Denbighshire County Council, said: “As a Council we will be marking VJ Day by flying a specially commissioned bilingual flag. The Council would like to pay tribute to those who took part in the campaign and thank them for their service and sacrifice.

“Sadly, because of the current situation we will be unable to hold a ceremony at County Hall to remember those involved in the conflict.”

VE Day marked the end of the war in Europe in May 1945 but many thousands of Armed Forces personnel were still involved in combat until Japan surrendered on 15 August 1945, which in effect ended the Second World War.

Cllr Richard Mainon, the Council’s Armed Forces Champion, said: “The Council marked VE Day in May and we would now like to thank the servicemen and women who were involved in VJ Day.

“On August 15 we will be remembering those Armed Forces personnel who made sacrifices and honouring their service.”
