A new app has been launched to help visitors navigate Snowdon and advise them how to treat Wales’ highest mountain with respect.

There has been much debate during the coronavirus crisis about how mass tourism impacts the surrounding communities following scenes of chaotic parking and littering.

Questions have been raised over whether a charge should be introduced for walkers wanting to climb to the summit to pay for the upkeep of the mountain, however Snowdonia National Park Authority said it would “not be legal or enforceable to charge a toll”.

Whilst officials said they would welcome a national conversation on improving visitor management, in the meantime the park authority has created an app designed to help visitors plan ahead.

It includes a GPS function to help people climb the six main paths to the top and watch out for dangerous sections along the way.

The app also features information to encourage everyone to protect the mountain.

Representatives for the park authority said: “Yr Wyddfa is a globally renowned, iconic mountain and home to vibrant, energetic communities and a mosaic of upland hill farms.

“It is a national asset, the most visited mountain in the UK, attracting people from across Wales, the UK and around the world.

“This app is designed by the Snowdonia National Park Authority together with partners who are responsible for the on-the-ground management of the mountain.

“The work ranges from conservation and path management to tourism, farming and mountain rescue.

“Our simple to use GPS-enabled app covers the six main paths to the summit of Yr Wyddfa with detailed route maps that tracks your progress as you ascend.

“This works offline, meaning no internet or phone signal is required when using the app on the mountain. Each map also includes contour information so you can look out for hazardous sections as you climb.

“This app will also help you plan ahead before your visit and includes important advice which will allow you to help us respect, care, and protect this incredible mountain, the surrounding environment and local communities.”

It can be downloaded via the Apple Store and Google Play.
