A man has been sentenced to more than nine years in prison for sexually assaulting a young woman in Bangor.

John Cervi, 38, of Treborth Road, Bangor, pleaded guilty to sexual assault by penetration following an incident in November 2020.

At Caernarfon Crown Court on Thursday (December 15th), he was sentenced to a total of nine years and four months in prison, with an extended licence period of five years.

He must complete two thirds of his sentence before he is eligible to apply for parole and will remain on the sex offenders register for life.

He was also made the subject of a lifetime restraining order, meaning he must never contact or approach the victim.

Detective Sergeant Rob Williams said: “Despite this horrific ordeal, the victim has shown great strength and bravery throughout this process.

“Violence against women and girls is a high priority for the force, and whilst we recognise that any form of violence is unacceptable, we welcome the sentence imposed.

“We will continue to place offenders before the court to face justice for heinous crimes such as these and putting Cervi behind bars today is certainly an indication of that.”
