Lorry parking problems return to Holyhead amid calls for new truck stop
Lorry parking problems have returned to Holyhead amid calls for a new truck strop to be created to alleviate the issue.
Ynys Môn MS Rhun ap Iorwerth said there had been “serious problems” with lorries parked all over the town this week.
He said the situation had been made worse because of ferry sailings over the Irish Sea being stopped due to stormy weather.
The Plaid Cymru MS has renewed calls for a new truck stop to be created in the area following the closure of the Roadking truck stop to turn it into a post-Brexit border post.
Mr ap Iorwerth told North.Wales: “People in Holyhead have been sharing their concerns with me about the large number of lorries parked in and around the town in recent days.
“Some have expressed concerns that parking in dangerous places could lead to accidents.
“We know why lorries have needed somewhere to park – it’s because of the impact of the storm on sailings across the Irish sea.
“But the issue we face is that we now have a lack of facilities to deal with such events.
“The loss of the Roadking truck stop, which was sold to be used as a post-Brexit border post, has compounded issues.
“The truck stop was a vital part of the port’s infrastructure, and made a big difference in terms of keeping trucks off the streets of Holyhead when it opened.
“We now have to see permanent replacement infrastructure being developed, and one or more locations in the vicinity of Holyhead.
“I’ve written to Welsh Government to highlight this week’s negative experience.”
