Llandudno’s famous goats to be rounded up after causing havoc
Llandudno’s famous goats are set to be rounded up after causing havoc across the town.
The animals become known globally during the Covid pandemic after they came down from the Great Orme and took ever the empty streets during lockdown.
While many people took the Kashmiri goats to their hearts, they have also caused damage to property and sparked road safety fears.
Last month, a number of goats were killed after being hit by a vehicle on the A470.
Following the incident, Aberconwy MS Janet Finch-Saunders, wrote to several bodies responsible for managing the goats to raise concerns.
The RSPCA has now revealed that a routine round-up of the goats will occur later this year.
It will allow them assess the health and welfare of the goats and provide contraceptives to control herd numbers where necessary.
National Resources Wales said Covid lockdown measures and difficulties in capturing one part of the herd meant a full round-up of the animals hadn’t been possible for several years.
Representatives said the goats involved in the recent collision were part of a breakaway herd which made their home in woodland near Wormhout Way during lockdown.
Ms Finch-Saunders said: “The goats are an intrinsic part of the Llandudno DNA. However, we must continue to work towards an effective, permanent solution that nurtures and preserves the harmony of goat and community.
“There is definitely some positive news here. The animals will be rounded-up this year with the aim of administering the much-needed contraception to keep the numbers within the agreed limits of between 100 and 160, although I suspect following a full round-up this number may be higher.
“In the meantime I thank those involved in the continued drama of the goats and look forward to working with everyone to ensure that incidents like the RTC last month do not happen again.”
