North Wales Police has teamed up with Tesco in a bid to tackle domestic abuse cases during the coronavirus lockdown.

The supermarket giant has agreed to help distribute leaflets which encourage people to report domestic abuse and also list organisations and agencies that offer support and advice.

It follows previous concerns that offences may be increasing or going unreported due to the COVID-19 restrictions.

Strategic Domestic Abuse Officer, PC Mike Taggart said: “A serious concern at the moment is isolation and the  effects of controlling and coercive behaviour as victims spend a much longer time in the company of their abuser during the lockdown.

“We need to get the message out that North Wales Police will deal with offenders robustly and that people should not suffer in silence. There is support out there.

“We are grateful to Tesco which has agreed to make these safeguarding tip leaflets available through click and collect and home deliveries from stores in Llandudno Junction, Holyhead, Bangor, Prestatyn and Wrexham.

Andy Smith of Tesco said: “Tesco stores across North Wales are pleased to be able to support North Wales Police by distributing these important leaflets, using our home shopping delivery service, while people stay home.”
