Boutique hotel in successful alcohol licence application

A new boutique hotel has been successful in its bid for an alcohol licence after being given the go-ahead by councillors.

The 24 bedroom Plas Weunydd hotel at the Llechwedd quarry site in Blaenau Ffestiniog had applied for a premises licence to serve alcohol between 11am and 11pm seven days a week.

The licence, which saw members following the advice of officers by offering their approval, had seen no opposition raised by local residents nor statutory bodies including North Wales Police.

The terms of the licence will also allow the performing of live and recorded music up until 11pm –  although only until 9pm outdoors – with the applicant agreeing to implement a CCTV system and a ‘Challenge 25’ alcohol sales policy.

The boutique hotel is expected to open to the public for the first time this year after previously being hit by the pandemic and its hosting of workers carrying out maintenance on Llechwedd’s hydroelectricity infrastructure.

Alastair Altham, Chairman of Llechwedd and a direct descendant of the founder of the mine in 1836, said in February: “We were so lucky to have the most perfect building for the creation of a hotel, it’s the old house that my forebears used to live in when they visited the mine all those years ago – every room is different and we set out with the simple objective – creating a really comfortable and stylish place to stay that would exceed the expectations of any of our 200,000 annual visitors.”
