Bid to develop former sailing club building into retail/business units in Pwllheli Marina
A bid to develop part of a former sailing club building for retail/business units is to be considered by planners.
The application is for a site located within Pwllheli marina, an area popular with tourists.
By reusing a former wash room facility, which has now fallen into disrepair, they claim it could “help maintain and improve the viability and services on offer at the marina”.
Cyngor Gwynedd is set to consider a proposal which could see four new small scale flexible use retail/business – non residential units – developed at the Caban, Pwllheli.
It comes together with plans for minor alterations and extensions.
The application has been made by Haydn Williams, of Haydn E Williams Cyf, at Caban Heli, Ystad Ddiwydiannol, Glan Y Don.
Planning documents noted that an assessment was submitted in support of a full planning application for the change of use of part of the former sailing club on behalf of Plas Heli Cyf.
“The building was previously used as the sailing club before Plas Heli, the Welsh National Sailing Academy was built in 2015,” the application stated.
“Since then, part of the building is used by Derwen, an integrated team working with disabled children and young people with continuing needs because of disabilities or illness.
“The building is now known as Caban Heli. The wash room facilities of the old sailing club have remained but have been underused due to the more modern facilities available at Plas Heli, leaving them in a state of disrepair.
“The proposal is to redevelop the former wash rooms into four small-scale flexible use units.
“These would be for all uses other than uses related to residential use.
The application stated that “Plas Heli Cyf has identified a need for the proposed development within the marina area of Pwllheli.
“It has made the commercial decision, based upon its significant locational advantages, to seek planning permission for the change of use.”
The proposed development would be located on the ground floor of Caban Heli.
It added that the “proposed development will not have a detrimental effect on the vitality and viability of the defined town centre”.
The application concluded that the proposed development is in “an attractive location on the edge of the harbour, a major visitor destination, and will help maintain and improve the viability and services on offer at the marina”.
