A farmer has been taken to hospital in a serious condition after falling into a disused quarry in Gwynedd.

Emergency teams were called to the incident near Penygroes at around 4.30pm yesterday afternoon after the man fell from a significant height of 30-40 metres.

He was found on the quarry floor by his family and friends after failing to return from tending to his livestock and was unable to move.

Members of the Aberglaslyn Mountain Rescue Team attended the scene after the alarm was raised, along with the Welsh Ambulance Service, EMRTs Wales and North Wales Cave Rescue.

In a post on Facebook, the rescue team said: “Once on scene a team doctor was quickly lowered into the quarry to assess and treat the casualty who was found to be in a serious but stable condition with multiple injuries to his head and legs.

“Using a rope rescue system, the casualty was placed into a stretcher by team members and raised from the quarry floor, prior to being carried through fields to an awaiting ambulance.

“The casualty was then conveyed to Ysbyty Gwynedd and onwards to the Major Trauma Centre at Stoke Hospital.

“We wish the casualty a speedy recovery.”
