Giant bugs have been created for the North Wales host town of this year’s I’m a Celebrity series.

Famous faces will be swapping the Australian jungle for Gwrych Castle in Abergele when the ITV show hosted by Ant and Dec begins on Sunday.

It comes after a change of venue was needed as a result of the coronavirus crisis.

To celebrate the occasion, Llandudno-based Venue Cymru has commissioned three large insects to go on display in the town.

Small World Theatre in Cardigan was tasked with making the huge figures ahead of the official air date.

Artistic director Bill Hamblett said: “It was challenging finding materials during the firebreak, but creating giant structures from reclaimed and repurposed materials is something we love to do”.

Mr Hamblett said Small World Theatre considers the impact on the environment when making all its work.

It previously brought a giant sea monster called “Clean Seas Cragen” the Beaumaris Food Festival in 2018.

The theatre’s work is aimed at raising awareness of the climate crisis and the natural world.

Artist Ann Shrosbree said: “A grasshopper, acorn weevil and a stag beetle were chosen because they are all important for the conservation of the rich biodiversity in this area. We hope they bring smiles to the town.”

Earlier this week, Conwy county council’s deputy leader told colleagues “there’s hope” the reality show will come back to North Wales again.

Despite it not having begun yet the authority’s deputy leader and economy spokesman, Cllr Goronwy Edwards, said there would be “spin-offs” from the production.
