Firefighters have withdrawn from dealing with a large wildfire in Gwynedd tonight for safety reasons.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service was first alerted to the blaze in Rhyd Uchaf at 12.30pm today.

Eight appliances were sent to the scene, along with a wild fire unit and incident command unit, with the fire said to cover a length of one kilometre.

The fire service has now confirmed crews have been withdrawn for the night, but said it will be monitoring the situation and returning at first light tomorrow.

In a post on Facebook, the service said: “Firefighters have withdrawn from firefighting activities at the wildfire at Rhyd Uchaf, Gwynedd this evening due to safety implications of operating in darkness.

“However, firefighters will be monitoring the incident throughout the night and crews will resume firefighting at first light tomorrow.

”We are aware that the fire can be seen for miles and there is no need for the public to call us regarding this incident.”
