A lorry driver who got behind the wheel whilst under the influence of alcohol has been banned from driving for 16 months.

The driver was spotted driving erratically along the A55, including weaving in and out of lanes, before being stopped by police at the entrance to Holyhead Port.

They provided a roadside reading of 64mg and later of 57mg in custody before being remanded to appear at Caernarfon Crown Court.

The driver was also handed a £639 fine after yesterday pleading guilty to driving a motor vehicle whilst being above the alcohol limit.

Speaking after sentencing, Superintendent Simon Barrasford said: “Unfortunately we are only too aware of the trauma that can be caused when these wagons are in the wrong hands.

“The actions of our officers prevented such an incident occurring.

“I would like to thank them for locating the HGV and for dealing with the abhorrent and reckless behaviour of the driver.

“I would also like to thank the members of the public who contacted us with their concerns.

“If you suspect someone is driving whilst being unfit to do so, please report it to police immediately by calling 101 (please call 999 if you suspect that there is immediate danger) or you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
