Damage has been caused to an ancient monument in Gwynedd after a party was held at the site.

The unauthorised event at Bryn Gaer Hillfort, Dinas Dinlle, is believed to have happened last weekend.

A fire was started within the hillfort, where excavation work is currently taking place, with a large quantity of litter also left behind.

Police have said they will be stepping up patrols in the area and are asking the public to report any further issues.

PCSO Iwan Owen from the North Wales Police Rural Crime Team said: “Bryn Gaer Hillfort is a scheduled ancient monument as well as being a site of special scientific interest.

“It is a pre-historic hillfort, with evidence of Roman occupation and not to mention that it may well feature in the Mabinogi as being the fort of Llwu Llaw Gyfell , a place steeped with history.

“Despite this, persons set a fire within the compound of the fort which is currently being excavated, wooden stakes were burnt, a section of wall was damaged and a large amount of litter was left behind.

We will be paying visits to the site to prevent further disruption but please phone the police should you see this type of behaviour at heritage site quoting #OPHERITAGECYMRU”
