Community Group in Negotiations to Take Over Public Toilets in Llanrwst
A community group remains in negotiations to take over public toilets in Llanrwst after Conwy County Council, closed the facilities because of repeated vandalism.
The toilets, at Watling Street car park, were shut and due to be knocked down after the council decided it could no longer afford the cost of maintaining them.
The car park has since been resurfaced using Welsh Government grant funding, but the toilet building remains after residents expressed an interest in taking it on.
Now a community group – Llamas – is hoping to take over the running of the toilet block from the council if they can secure funding.
Llanrwst councillor Aaron Wynne explained the current situation.
“My best understanding of how things stand now is that the group and the council are trying to agree the terms of the lease around what they are going to do with the building, what’s their responsibility, what’s the responsibility of the council, and I think they are in the process of speaking to other community groups about how they run their toilets,” he said.
He added: “If the community group get together and find the funding, it is good news. It would be good for the town; it’s good for local businesses; it’s good for tourism, so it would be good news if they can take the toilets over.”
A spokeswoman for Conwy County Council commented: “Whilst there has been interest in taking over the Watling Street toilets, no formal arrangements have been agreed.”
