Conservation charity wins funding to improve four nature reserves across North Wales

A conservation charity has won funding to improve and enhance four nature reserves across North Wales.

The money has been awarded to Wrexham-based Wild Ground through the Welsh Government’s Landfill Disposals Tax Communities Scheme.

The reserves which will benefit from investment are Aberderfryn, Stryt Las and Brandie Brook in Johnstown, Wrexham and Glascoed in St Asaph.

Glascoed is an open access reserve covering nearly eight hectares.

It was created in 2000 to support a group of great crested newts which were displaced by the construction of St Asaph Business Park.

The funding has so far been used to replace gates and repair fences and styles.

It has also helped to upgrade the bird hide and will result in the creation of a new pond and signs for visitors.

Additional habitat works will take place, such as ragwort removal, to allow for conservation grazing.

Various activities have recently taken place at the three sites in Wrexham, including the removal of rubbish, graffiti and damage caused by campfires.

Other wildlife-themed activities are planned for all four of the sites, including volunteering, community and training events.
