Police have urged people on social media not to jeopardise an investigation into a hit and run incident on Anglesey which resulted in a three-year-old girl sustaining serious injuries.

The young girl was knocked down by the driver of a black Ford Focus in Pencraig, Llangefni shortly before 5pm yesterday afternoon.

She was airlifted to Alder Hey Hospital in Liverpool with head injuries, but the driver fled the scene on foot.

A 19-year-old local man was found in Llangefni town centre a short while later where he was arrested and taken to custody.

Police said the incident had attracted a large amount of comments on social media and are asking people not to speculate on the circumstances as it could put the case at risk.

In a statement on Facebook, they said: “We understand the upset the hit and run collision involving the three-year-old girl in Llangefni yesterday afternoon has caused, and we, along with all of you wish her a speedy recovery.

“We issued an update on the thread earlier this morning, but due to the ongoing comments we thought we’d share as a new post due to some people not seeing the latest information.

“We would just like to make it clear, the 19-year-old man who was involved in this incident has been released under investigation, which means our enquiries are ongoing – including waiting for the results of further tests.

“It is vitally important that we establish the full circumstances surrounding what happened.

“Can we also remind some of you that this is an ongoing live investigation and would urge you not to speculate on the circumstances or person involved due to potential for jeopardising any future prosecution.

“This is not a trial by social media.

“We are in close contact with the little’s girl’s family who are being kept updated – and we too, send our warmest wishes to them all and hope that she makes a full recovery.”

Police are continuing to appeal for any witnesses to the incident to come forward.

If you were in the Pencraig area of Llangefni yesterday afternoon and witnessed the car being driven before the collision, or if you witnessed the incident and are yet to speak to officers, you should contact police quoting the incident number: Y081556.
