A rescue operation was triggered off the coast of Anglesey after eyewitnesses reported seeing a microlight falling from the sky.

The Moelfre RNLI lifeboat team was called at 9.20am this morning to reports of an object landing in the sea off Porth Llechog (Bull Bay).

The all-weather boat were launched as the Holyhead Coastguard issued an urgent call for all ships in the area to keep a lookout and provide support if required.

However, just as a second lifeboat was being prepared, a passing vessel caught sight of the object and discovered it was a large bunch of balloons.

The RNLI team said: “With that information and confirmation that nothing else was sighted the all-weather boat was stood down, and the inshore lifeboat launch was cancelled.

“This was a false alarm with good intent.

“Both the boats and station were made good, sanitised, and prepared to await the next call.”
