The RNLI has released the harrowing audio of a 999 call made by a teenage paddleboarder who was swept out to sea off the coast of Gwynedd.

A major rescue operation was launched after Alfie, aged 17, got into difficulty whilst out on his board in Aberdaron Bay at around 3.45pm on Monday, 10 August.

The Coastguard helicopter and Abersoch lifeboat team were scrambled, however at one stage their efforts were hampered by strong winds and difficult tidal conditions.

During the ordeal, an emergency call handler remained on the phone to Alfie, who can be heard telling him he was scared he was going to drown.

Fortunately the teen was carrying his mobile phone in a waterproof pouch and was able to describe his location between Ynys Gwylan and the Aberdaron headland.

Rescue teams said that decision ultimately saved his life as he was spotted in the water and lifted into the lifeboat.

Alfie appeared to have swallowed a significant amount of water and was showing signs of hypothermia, so he was winched onto the helicopter and immediately flown to Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor.

Thankfully he recovered and was released the following day, enabling him and his father to visit the lifeboat station to express their gratitude.

Members of the Abersoch RNLI team said: “Does anyone remember our shout from 10th August about 17 year old Alfie? Here’s a short video about that day.

“Thankfully Alfie was safely rescued but his decisions certainly saved his life and we’re incredibly proud of our volunteer crew who attended that day.
.
“We suggest all paddleboarders carry safety equipment and a form of communication in addition to wearing the safety leash.

“Get proper training, stay within your capabilities and tell someone your going and your expected time to return.

“Have a great Bank Holiday weekend. If you or you see someone in trouble call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
