‘No intention’ for Pontins Prestatyn to house asylum seekers, says MP
There are no plans for Pontins in Prestatyn to be used to house asylum seekers following its sudden closure, a local MP has said.
Prestatyn Sands, the budget seaside holiday park on the border of Flintshire and Denbighshire, which has catered for thousands of families each year, has closed with immediate effect.
Pontins Holidays issued a brief statement via its website on Thursday stating: “We regret to inform you that our parks in Prestatyn and Camber Sands will be closing with immediate effect.”
It went on to say, “Customers whose bookings will be affected by these closures will be contacted by our team and refunded. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
The lack of detailed information from Pontins had led to various theories and concerns in the community regarding the future of these sites.
James Davies, MP for Vale of Clwyd, took to social media to express his surprise at the announcement, stating, “The announcement of the closure of Pontins Prestatyn Sands is unexpected.”
Davies said he was actively seeking more information from Britannia Hotels, the owners, to understand the implications of this closure for the local community.
Highlighting the site’s reputation, Davies also expressed hope for a positive change that could benefit the town.
Amidst rising speculation, he provided a crucial update: “I have sought and received confirmation from the Home Office this evening that there remains no intention to use the site to house asylum seekers.”
