Police have invited a man who is wanted for failing to appear in court to hand himself in.

A warrant has been issued for David John Evans from Rhyl, who officers have dubbed the “national hide and seek champion”.

In a post on Facebook, North Wales Police jokingly said he would be offered the prize of an overnight stay in custody if he turns up at the local police station.

The force said: “North Wales Police would like to invite Mr David John Evans of the Rhyl area to attend his local police station to collect his prize for winning the national “hide and seek” championship.

“On attendance Mr Evans will be awarded a free night in the highly recommended ‘Hotel de Custody’, where an exclusive single room (with WC) awaits at our state of the art facility in the beautiful countryside near the city of St Asaph.

“In addition, a specially prepared meal for one will be delivered by Room Service (*not available 24 hours).

“If you are able to offer any information as to the current whereabouts of this 30 year old, please make contact with us using the online webchat facility, our 101 non-emergency number, or alternatively via the anonymous CrimeStoppers line on 0800 555111 (reference: 21000838383).

“Make sure to check our social media pages over the coming days for more lucky winners!”

The tongue in cheek post was generally warmly received by people on Facebook.

One person said: “Best appeal ever. Who ever did this post deserves a bonus!!”

However another described the post as “very unprofessional”.

In response to the criticism, North Wales Police said: “We often do more ‘normal’ appeals, but when you’ve got a prize that money simply can’t buy, we thought we’d try something different. And after all, it got your attention, didn’t it?”
