Man dies after “getting into difficulty in the sea” at Barmouth

A man has sadly died after an incident in Barmouth this afternoon.

North Wales Police have issued a short statement following the incident that saw a large emergency service response, including two air ambulances, the coastguard helicopter, the local lifeboat as well as multiple land units.

The police and the coastguard were called at 1.58pm today to a report that a man had got into difficulty in the sea in Barmouth.

Police say, “The man, believed to be in his 30s and on holiday in the area, was taken by Air Ambulance to Ysybyty Gwynedd, where he tragically died.

“His family have been made aware.”

“There are no further details available at present.”

Update: The Coastguard Operations Centre has issued an update on the incident in Barmouth this afternoon, along with other calls in North Wales today including at Aberdyfi.

At 1.31pm HM Coastguard received a 999 call reporting people in the water off Barmouth and sent Barmouth Coastguard Rescue Team, Barmouth RNLI lifeboat and HM Coastguard’s fixed wing aircraft. Barmouth Harbour Master and the Coastguard rescue helicopter and Helimed also attended. A male casualty was recovered from the water and transferred to hospital in a serious condition.

A second incident at Hellswater involved three people in the water and Abersoch Coastguard Rescue Team and Abersoch RNLI lifeboat attended to give medical care on scene to the casualties who were suffering with suspected hypothermia.

At 2.45pm HM Coastguard was alerted to another incident with a report of three people in the water at Aberdovy. Aberdovy Coastguard Rescue Team and Aberdovy RNLI lifeboat attended and an adult male was recovered from the water, given medical care on scene and transferred by Helimed to hospital.

HM Coastguard has also urged all coastal visitors to take extra care when visiting the coast, “Learn how to keep you and your family safe at www.coastguardsafety.campaign.gov.uk and for an emergency at the coast call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”

The RNLI Barmouth lifeboat has been launched, along with coastguard helicopter support.

The Wales Air Ambulance has also attended the location, along with land vehicles from police and the ambulance service just before 2pm.

One local report has said a rescue has taken place of individuals who were in difficulty in the sea.
