Unanimous Approval for Volvo Franchise Development on Former Abattoir Site

Proposals for a garage development for washing and servicing commercial vehicles on a former abattoir site have been unanimously agreed.
The proposals could see the creation of 25 mechanics jobs and the establishment of apprenticeships as part of a developing Volvo franchise servicing North West Wales, Gwynedd planners heard at a meeting.
Visible from the Caernarfon bypass, the “substantial” building scheme on the site of the demolished abattoir on the Cibyn Industrial estate, was “likely to be a benefit the local economy” said planning officer Gwawr Hughes.
Cyngor Gwynedd’s planning committee approved a full application with conditions at a meeting on Monday, (April 22).
It agreed to the development of a new workshop/office building, a workshop/welding building and a vehicle wash unit together with a private fuel storage tank and other ancillary spaces.
The proposals also included a 500sq m storage area, 15 HGV parking spaces, 40 parking spaces including three disabled, eight EV charging points. and a bike storage area.
The application was made by Cibyn Commercial Vehicles Ltd, through agent Russell-Hughes Cyf. The site is located on Lôn Cae Darbi (unclassified road) on the east periphery of Cibyn Industrial Estate .
Owain Evans for the applicant, said “This is an application for a building for the repair and servicing of commercial vehicles which will create at least 25 new jobs. This proposal is for developing a Volvo franchise which will service North West Wales.
“The site will employ 25 mechanics and will work with a nearby college to create apprenticeships for people in the local area.  It is a brilliant opportunity for Cibyn and the wider Caernafon area and has taken a considerable time to reach the committee. There is no doubt this will be an improvement on the previous use and buildings, namely the abattoir.”
The site is in an area where low levels of contamination had been identified and conditions to mitigate any potential risk were imposed.
Cllr Gareth Coj Parry proposed accepting the officer’s recommendations to approve with conditions, saying he lived in the area and it was “too good an opportunity to miss”.
It was seconded by Cllr Elwyn Edwards. In a vote there were 10 in favour no abstentions, no-one against.
