Demolition of a Bangor primary school proposed

Proposals to demolish a Bangor primary school have been submitted to planning chiefs.

The submission, made by Gwynedd Council’s property department, proposes to knock down Ysgol Babanod Coed Mawr to make way for future housing projects.

Work is already well underway on a new building to replace Ysgol y Garnedd, increasing its capacity to 420, but also resulting in the closure of Ysgol Babanod Coed Mawr and Ysgol Glanadda.

Coed Mawr catered for infant children between the ages of three and seven, but a decision was taken to close both schools in 2018.

Previously having a nursery section and three classes, in 2011 it merged with  Ysgol Glanadda to create Ysgol Bro Dewi.

Part of a £12m investment into education in the city, the new Ysgol y Garnedd opened in November 2020.

According to the supporting documents, it is proposed to demolish existing redundant school buildings and redevelop the site for housing although no specific proposals for any future build on the site have yet been revealed.

A subsequent diversity study also found no bat issues associated with the 1960’s built facility, but that the potential for nesting birds would require the sensitive timing of such works.

It’s expected that Gwynedd Council’s planning department will make a decision over the coming weeks.
