Camper van site at Portmeirion
Planners have approved a bid to create a camper van site at a popular Gwynedd tourist attraction.
Meeting on Monday, Gwynedd’s planning committee approved the plan for a 23 vehicle camping site on part of the Portmeirion car park.
The proposals, approved unanimously, also include new toilet and shower facilities as well as a reception at the Italianate village.
The report, presented to members, confirmed that officers proposed approval after being persuaded that the scheme would “add to and broaden the range of accommodation that is available, and bring more overnight tourists to the site.”
The design and access statement accompanying the application, added: “The scheme has been developed so that any potentially detrimental impact is minimised whilst at the same time creating an additional facility at this important tourist attraction, with the intention of improving the tourist offer at the site and therefore to expand the business in a sympathetic way and to improve viability.
“It also includes a proposal to improve the main pedestrian entrance to the village.
“This would be beneficial to the food and retail outlets in Portmeirion village, as well as those in the wider area of Penrhyndeudraeth and beyond.
“This in turn would provide local employment and expenditure in the local economy.”
