The First Minister has provided clarity on whether Father Christmas can visit North Wales this year.

The region is currently under tough restrictions to stop the spread of the coronavirus, with the whole of Wales at alert level four over the festive period.

It means that for most the advice is to stay at home and avoid mixing, but one special person has been given permission to visit millions of homes across the country in one night.

It follows a letter being sent by Clwyd West MS Darren Millar seeking reassurance that Father Christmas will be able to deliver presents.

First Minister Mark Drakeford has responded to clear the way for Santa to fly his sleigh around the region, despite some UK flights recently being grounded.

However, unlike previous years, he will have to observe strict social distancing rules.

In his response, Mr Drakeford said: “I have spoken with Father Christmas’ helpers in the North Pole to let them know that of course he will be allowed to enter Welsh airspace on Christmas Eve.

“He is able to come to people’s homes as part of his work, though he will make sure he maintains social distancing, wears a face covering, and washes his hands between each house.

“It is more important than ever though that children go to bed early on Christmas Eve and not stay up late to try to see him.

“If you do see him, please remember to protect Father Christmas and other children, by maintaining social distance and if you leave cookies for him think about having hand sanitiser next to them.

“The sharing of gifts is important to many of us at Christmas time.

“This year, it is important for us to do so in a way which adheres to regulations and helps protect us from Covid-19.

“Delivering and leaving gifts on a doorstep or exchanging gifts in the outdoors is one way for us to enjoy the magic of Christmas whilst also keeping ourselves and our loved ones safe.

“I wish you and all the residents of Clwyd West a safe and merry Christmas.”
