The Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways have chosen not to reopen despite Wales’ firebreak lockdown measures coming to an end.

The Gwynedd railway lines, which attract a large number of tourists, closed for the second time this year on October 23rd brought in measures to stop the spread of Covid-19.

While most businesses required to shut started welcoming customers again today, the company which runs the railways said it had taken the decision to stay shut, but would keep the situation “under constant review”.

It issued the following statement on its website:

Following an in depth review and evaluation of the Railway’s current situation, we have decided that train services will not recommence at the present moment.

Our catering outlets at Spooner’s, Porthmadog Station, Tea Room at Tan-Y-Bwlch Station and Café De Winton at Caernarfon Station will remain closed.

Our retail outlets at Porthmadog Station and Caernarfon Station will remain closed.

Please note, the commercial side of the railway will continue to operate and therefore orders can be placed via the online shop.

Our Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways Online Shop is the perfect place for all your Christmas gifts this Winter!

We have hundreds of fantastic items available on our Online Shop including Artwork, Books, Calendars, Clothing, DVDs and Miniature Railway Models.

All purchases will be a huge help towards the Railway, especially in times where we are unable to operate our regular services.

The developing situation will be kept under constant review, with further announcements being made via our website and social media pages in due course.

We would like to thank you all for your support.
