A drug driver has been caught out after travelling into North Wales from England to go swimming.

Police carrying out coronavirus stop checks in Betws-y-Coed yesterday afternoon picked up the smell of cannabis as a Vauxhall Corsa passed them by.

The car was stopped and a police motorcyclist was told those inside had come from the Chester area to go swimming due to the good weather.

The 23-year-old driver failed a roadside drugs test after testing positive for cannabis and he was arrested.

He was later released pending the results of further tests after arrangements were made for his passengers and car to be taken home.

A police spokesperson said: Visitors will be welcome back to North Wales once it is safe to do so, however please note that those who drive whilst under the influence are NOT welcomed and our patrols will continue.”
