“Wonderful surprise” after town council’s foodbank cash boost
The founder of a community food bank has welcomed a gift of more than £3,000 from a town council.
Conwy county councillor Penny Andow, who formed Llanfairfechan food bank, welcomed the £3,333 cash award from Conwy town council.
It was part of £10,000 split between Llanfairfechan food bank, Conwy food bank and the Bro Celynnin ministry area which is assisting families over the Christmas period.
Cllr Andow, who represents Pandy ward on the county council, said: “This was a wonderful surprise and very greatly appreciated as the need is growing daily and this donation allows to to continue to deliver to all areas as far as Old Colwyn.”
Cllr Andow has seen demand rocket during the pandemic and her work even saw her get help from Welsh Government, after its food parcels for vulnerable people were under-subscribed.
After contacting Cardiff she managed to get them sent around Wales to boost the stocks of food banks.
Mayor of Conwy, Cllr Emma Leighton-Jones said: “It is fair to say that many families in our community are feeling the brutal effects of the pandemic and we know that many more families are sadly turning to food banks for much needed help.
“The donation we have made will hopefully make a difference to families in our community and I would like to thank all those who are volunteering to help those in need during this difficult time.”
