A company in Glan Conwy has lodged an unusual planning application and, despite first appearances, it’s anything but boring.
GeoVista Ltd has applied to Conwy county council for permission to drill a 200ft, 15cm borehole on it’s premises at Glan Conwy.
The company makes precision measuring equipment used in mining, construction and drilling industries and is fed up of having to drive to Cheshire to test its equipment which is sold all over the world.
The hole would be on its premises at Cae Ffwt Business Park, Glan Conwy, and hidden by a manhole cover when not in use.
A spokesman for the company said:  “We make probes and take measurements underground. At the moment we have to go all the way to Cheshire to test our equipment at borehole belonging to North-West Water.
“It’s a day we have to take out of our week, so we have put our hands in our pockets so we can have a borehole here.
“We’ll be able to drop our probes here and check they are doing what they are supposed to do.”
The probes can check the rock strata in boreholes and can also be set up to test micro-seismic activity by replicating movement underground.
They also have probes that check for pollution and contamination and measure the subsurface of developments. Most of its business is conducted overseas.
If the application is successful it means the company can spend more time at its base and the borehole itself will be sunk by another North Wales firm.
The testing borehole will be forged by Dragon Drilling based in Corwen, who have 30 years experience of doing similar work.
