Concerns over “embarrassing” sports facilities have led to formal plans being unveiled for a new all-weather 3G surface in the heart of Holyhead.

The proposals, which have been submitted to Anglesey Council planners, would see the existing tennis courts at Parc Garreglwyd converted into a 3G facility for local sports teams to train on.

It would not be large enough to host formal matches however, if approved it would be the only 3G facility on the island suitable to put-on rugby games.

There have been long been calls to create a new sports facility in Holyhead amid complaints about the state of existing astroturf surface at Millbank  – particularly during bad weather,
A much improved replacement now looks to be closer than ever after Anglesey Council and Holyhead Town Council reached an agreement over funding worth £120,000.

Showers, extra toilets and a new car park would also be built as part of the development at Holyhead Park.

The current floodlights and fencing at the park would also be upgraded while the existing tennis facility will be moved elsewhere.
The design and access statement accompanying the application submitted by Holyhead Town Council says that the authority would be responsible for its operation and management.

If approved, it’s expected that the facility would be open on weekdays between 8:30am and 9:15pm, and 9am until 5:15pm on weekends with only pre-bookings being accepted.

“Despite maintenance work the state of the Millbank facility has led to significant disruption for junior and senior football teams and ever growing calls for a replacement with nearly 2,000 people signing an online petition,” it goes on to say.

“The proposed development would provide a 3G synthetic turf facility which will be available to local schools during the day and sporting groups for evenings and weekends.”
Having held a public consultation over the plans, over 90% of the 339 responses had welcomed the idea of a 3G pitch being developed at the site.

It’s expected that Anglesey Council’s planning department will make a decision over the coming months.
